Tracing Manchester's Histories

Celebrating Manchester's
Untold Stories

Manchester’s history is shaped by countless people, communities, places and experiences. Yet many of these stories remain overlooked, underrepresented or absent from the city’s public spaces.

This Is Us: Tracing Manchester’s Histories is a community-led heritage project seeking to reshape and redefine how Manchester’s public spaces reflect the city’s rich and diverse histories.

The project aims to celebrate overlooked stories, reflect on complex legacies and create spaces where more people can see their histories represented and their voices heard.

Through oral histories, photographs, audio recordings, videos, archive materials and personal memories, the project will create a new digital platform celebrating the people and communities that have shaped Manchester.

The project will also support a group of Digital Champions to develop skills in oral history, storytelling, recording, archiving and working respectfully with different communities. They will help people across Manchester collect, preserve and share histories that deserve to be remembered.

Coming Soon

The new website will bring together:

  • Hidden and underrepresented Manchester histories
  • Oral histories and personal stories
  • Photographs, recordings and archive materials
  • Community-led research and creative work
  • Resources to help people explore and record local histories
  • Opportunities to contribute stories and get involved

How can you be involved?

We are inviting contributions of existing stories, audio recordings, photographs and other materials that highlight histories missing or untold in Manchester’s public spaces.

You may have a personal story, a community memory or an archive or collection that deserves a wider platform.

We are particularly interested in contributions that explore:

  • Who has not been represented
  • Whose voices have been quietened or overlooked
  • Which histories are still waiting to be seen and heard

We would welcome the opportunity to connect with individuals, community groups, organisations and archives across Manchester.
